Dreaming of your own peach-blackberry cobbler or pie? Then it’s time for a trip to Ham Orchards, the farm store and peach orchard about 45 minutes away from Dallas near Terrell, just off U.S. Highway 80.
In addition to peach orchards, the Ham family enterprise boasts about 5 acres of blackberry vines, and "They’re just covered out there," says family member Richard Strange. There’s still about a week of ripe pickin’, he estimates.
That dovetails with the beginning of the freestone peach season (when the fruit falls easily off of the pit), coveted by Texas peach fans.
People choose peaches during the Parker County Peach Festival in downtown Weatherford.
The Ham market also carries locally grown produce, jarred foods (jams, jellies, dressings, salsa and more), fruit ciders, soft-serve peach ice cream and Eddie Dean barbecue (including peach pulled pork). Plus, there’s a whole pavilion full of rockers, if you just want to sit a spell, catching the Texas breeze.
And if you don’t want to make that cobbler yourself, there are plenty of frozen baked goods to go, including a killer peach pie, all made on the premises.
Then on Aug. 15, Ham folds up the operation like a circus tent come to town and gone. It springs back to life nine months later, around May 15, our bellwether of peach time in East Texas.
